What was supposed to be a cloudy evening turned into one of the warmest, clearest nights I’ve ever experienced since moving here.

1. The Weather Can’t Be Trusted
On the East Coast, weather apps can usually be trusted. In Big Sur, not so much. The forecast may say “cloudy” but you’ll show up to sunshine—or vice versa. The only predictable thing here is unpredictability.
2. Best Time of Year for Sunlight
If you’re hoping for golden sunshine, the best months are mid-August through the end of October. Summer can bring in fog, but those late-summer and early-fall months often bless us with the most consistent light.
3. The Ocean Here Is No Joke
Unlike the Gulf or calmer coastlines, Big Sur’s waves are powerful. Sneaker waves and rip tides are common, and they can be dangerous. During the session with my couple, we only went ankle-deep at Garrapata State Beach—anything more would’ve been risky. Romantic ocean photos here are stunning, but safety always comes first.
4. Not Every Spot Is Kid-Friendly
Some locations in Big Sur are magical for couples and adults, but not safe for little ones. Soberanes, for example, has dramatic cliffs that drop straight into the ocean. It’s jaw-dropping for photos, but not recommended for young children.
5. Wear the Right Shoes
The terrain in Big Sur can be rough, uneven, and sometimes slippery. Think hiking trails, dirt paths, and rocky overlooks. Cute but sturdy shoes like Blundstones, hiking boots, or any comfortable terrain-friendly shoes will save you from rolled ankles (and still look great in photos).

Even when the day feels warm, the temperature drops quickly once the sun sets. Outwear that matches your photoshoot vibe is key—you’ll stay warm without sacrificing your look. For my East Coast couple, we lucked out with one of the warmest evenings ever, but that’s rare.
7. Download Offline Maps Beforehand
One thing many visitors don’t realize: cell service is almost nonexistent in Big Sur. Download offline maps ahead of time and finalize all communication with your photographer at least an hour before the shoot. Once you’re on Highway 1, you’re mostly off the grid.
8. Plan for Extra Time
Driving along Highway 1 takes longer than expected. Winding roads, narrow shoulders, and slow traffic can add time to your trip. Always give yourself a buffer so you’re not rushed.
9. Prep Around Your Photoshoot Plans
If you’re making dinner plans before or after your session, make sure the timing aligns. Most restaurants in Big Sur close earlier than you might expect, and many of the popular options are either in Carmel-by-the-Sea or deeper into Big Sur town. In Carmel, reservations are highly recommended—especially for fine dining spots.
