Some sessions feel extra special, and this one really hit home.

The T-Family are repeat clients — the kind that feel more like old friends at this point. I’ve been lucky enough to photograph several of their life chapters, and this time, they reached out because they’re leaving California later this year and wanted to capture one last season of life here. No big production. No stiff posing. Just honest, candid family photos along the coast that’s been part of their everyday story.

Naturally, Carmel-by-the-Sea delivered.

Why Ribera Beach Is a Hidden Gem for Family & Couples Sessions

We met at Ribera Beach, which is one of those Carmel spots that quietly shows off without trying too hard (very on brand for the Monterey Peninsula). The sun was bright but softened by the sea-salted air, creating this natural glow that felt like everything was wrapped in a light halo. The stacked rocks along the shoreline cast dramatic shadows, and across the bay you can spot the iconic Point Lobos State Natural Reserve — casually reminding you that yes, you are somewhere very special.

The waves were crashing hard, spraying everywhere, and while the ocean was definitely feeling bold that day, we kept the kids a safe distance from the water. Safety first… fun immediately after.

Kids Being Kids (a.k.a. Why I Love Family Sessions)

Even without splashing in the waves, the kids had plenty going on. Tide pooling turned into treasure hunting. Tag turned into full sprint mode. There was some brotherly tackling (zero injuries, maximum laughter), and a whole lot of unfiltered joy.

Meanwhile, mom and dad got to do what parents rarely get to do during photos: relax. They stood back, soaking it all in — watching their kids explore, laugh, and just be kids as the sun dipped lower and the marine fog slowly rolled in like it had somewhere important to be.

This is exactly why I approach family photography in Carmel, Monterey, and Big Sur the same way I approach elopements and couples sessions: minimal direction, lots of space to be yourselves, and room for the magic to happen naturally.

Quiet Ending (and a Surprise Air Show)

To wrap up the session, we wandered down to a sandy stretch of beach where something unexpected stole the show — a plane flying low, looping circles over the bay. The kids immediately locked in, and the whole family sat together watching it glide through the sky.

No rushing. No forced smiles. Just a quiet moment that felt like a perfect pause button.

The Beauty of Documentary-Style Sessions on the Central Coast

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: family sessions are my favorite. Kids don’t worry about where to stand. Parents don’t have to perform. Everyone just shows up as they are — and that’s where the good stuff lives.

Whether it’s a family session in Carmel, a couples session along the Big Sur coastline, or an intimate elopement in Monterey County, my goal is always the same: create space for real connection, real moments, and memories that actually feel like you.

And for the T-family, this session wasn’t just about photos. It was about honoring a chapter, celebrating the chaos and beauty of family life, and saying a soft goodbye to California — salty air, foggy sunsets, and all.

If that’s not worth documenting, I don’t know what is.
