So when we decided to head to Mammoth Lakes, California for fall foliage, hiking, and fly fishing, I had no idea just how magical it would be.
From the first drive through the High Sierra to the last morning of snowfall, it felt like stepping into a living painting. The colors, light, and atmosphere here make Mammoth one of the most breathtaking places in California — and an absolute dream for photography.

One of the most peaceful and picturesque spots in the Mammoth area is the Owens River. It’s known for some of the best fly fishing in the West, and honestly, it’s just as stunning as it is serene. The wide-open fields glow golden in the fall and turn bright green in the spring and early summer, creating the perfect natural backdrop for photos.
These meadows are surrounded by the High Sierra mountain range, which gives the whole area a cinematic, larger-than-life feel. Whether you’re planning an engagement session, family shoot, maternity photos, or an adventurous couples session, the Owens River has everything — water, texture, mountains, and that soft California light that makes photos glow.
A fun, cinematic photo idea? Fly fishing the Owens River for trout. My husband caught his first trout here, and it was such a special moment. There’s something so peaceful about casting a line with the mountains behind you, golden grass around you, and the sound of the river flowing by. On our last morning, Mammoth was dusted in fresh snow — and it felt completely magical.
