A rainy day in Big Sur turned magical—mountains, redwoods, and cozy moments made this couples session an adventure to remember.

Couples Photo Session in Big Sur – Redwoods, Prairies, and a Little Rain

S + B hadn’t had photos taken in a while, and they wanted to capture this moment in their lives—this season, this memory, just as it is. And honestly? That’s exactly why I love photographing a Big Sur couples session. Every single time, it feels different.

Most people who reach out to me are hoping for golden sunsets and blue skies—and don’t get me wrong, Big Sur can absolutely deliver that. But some of the best and most memorable sessions I’ve ever photographed here have happened in fog or rain. Those moody conditions bring out a totally different side of Big Sur: dramatic mountains peeking through mist, redwoods dripping with rain, the coastline looking wild and powerful.

Big Sur’s Unpredictable Weather

Here’s the thing about Big Sur: you can’t control it. The weather here is never straightforward, and you really do have to pack for anything. Sunshine, fog, drizzle, or full-on rainstorms—it’s all part of the experience. And honestly? That’s what makes it so magical.

If you’re someone who really wants sun, the best time to plan photos in Big Sur is usually late August through mid-October. But every season brings its own magic, and even cloudy or rainy days add a moodiness that you just can’t fake. S + B embraced that perfectly.

Redwood + Prairie Adventure

S + B chose to skip the cliffs and instead spend their session in the redwoods and prairie area of Big Sur. We started off in a tucked-away patch of redwoods that felt cozy and intimate, then made our way to the wide-open prairie, where the views stretch on forever. Pro tip: if you’re planning to drive out to the prairie area, make sure you have a higher-clearance car—you don’t want to bottom out on the road!

Instead of stiff, posed photos, S + B wanted their session to feel natural, fun, and real. That meant plenty of movement, laughter, and just letting them be themselves. When the rain started, they didn’t shy away—they literally danced in it. Think total Notebook vibes: messy hair, soaked clothes, big smiles, and those “we’ll remember this forever” kinds of moments.

Couples Sessions or Elopements in Big Sur

What I loved most about this session is how it really felt like a reminder of why people choose Big Sur for everything from simple couple sessions to full Big Sur elopements. It’s not just about the scenery (though the redwoods, mountains, and coastline are unreal). It’s about the adventure of it all—the unpredictability, the way the weather keeps you on your toes, and how the location forces you to slow down and be present with each other.

Whether you’re planning a quick couples shoot, celebrating an anniversary, or even eloping here, Big Sur is the kind of place that will give you memories you’ll hold onto forever.

S + B’s rainy-day adventure was everything a Big Sur couples session should be: fun, unposed, a little messy, and completely unforgettable. If you’re thinking about planning your own couples photos—or even a Big Sur elopement—my biggest piece of advice is this: embrace whatever the day gives you. Rain, fog, or sunshine, Big Sur will always deliver something magical
