A Surprise Proposal Along the Big Sur Coast
J first reached out to me because he connected with my filmy, unposed, documentary-style photography. He wasn’t looking for stiff poses or overly curated images — he wanted something real. Something that felt like them.
A + J were traveling to Big Sur for the Big Sur Food & Wine Festival, joined by their closest friends who had flown in for the weekend. Seeing the opportunity to have everyone together, J quietly began planning the perfect surprise proposal. We met ahead of time to talk through the plan. J shared that he wanted to propose somewhere along the Big Sur coastline, ideally on a cliff overlooking the ocean — intimate, emotional, and cinematic.
As they arrived at the proposal location, Big Sur worked its magic in a way no one could have planned. Out in the distance, a pod of humpback whales began breaching in the ocean below the cliffs. The timing was unreal. The energy was electric. And the moment felt straight out of a dream. J led A to the edge of the cliffs, ocean stretching endlessly behind them — and that’s where he popped the question. As they hugged and took it all in, cheers erupted from the background. Their friends, hidden nearby, celebrating them from afar. A had no idea this proposal was coming — and her excitement, shock, and joy were written all over her face.
Later, J shared that he had been saving for the perfect ring because, in his words, “she deserves everything and more.” And honestly — you could feel that love in every interaction between them.
An Engagement Session That Didn’t Feel Like a Photoshoot
Before the session, J mentioned that they “weren’t really picture people” and might not want to use the full session time. But once we got started, everything shifted. They laughed. They moved.
