VENDORS

You don’t have to hire vendors for your day, but having a small team you trust can make everything feel so much easier and more elevated. It’s not about turning your elopement into a big production — it’s about having support so you can actually relax and be present instead of doing everything yourself.

Couples often bring in things like hair and makeup, florals, an officiant, or even a private chef or videographer depending on their vision. I’m always happy to share my go-to recommendations, but it’s important that you choose people who truly feel right for you — definitely take time to read reviews, look through their work, and even hop on a call if you can to make sure you vibe with them.

At the end of the day, the best vendors aren’t just talented — they make you feel comfortable, supported, and excited. And one last tip: book early! Around here, especially for hair and makeup, calendars fill up fast

FLORIST

Quick Tips to Remember for Your Florals

Florals can bring so much life, color, and that romantic “wedding day” feeling to your elopement, all while being tailored to your personal style. For elopements especially, it’s important to choose arrangements that travel well and can handle outdoor conditions like wind, heat, or colder temperatures.

When working with your florist, it’s a good idea to ask for durable blooms and elements that will hold up throughout the day. Things like dried florals, grasses, sturdy greenery, plants with woody stems, and even sustainably sourced feathers can be beautiful options that are less delicate. It’s also important to avoid anything that produces seeds, as some locations have strict environmental guidelines.

Depending on where your session or ceremony takes place, you may be required to use native, non-invasive materials. This is especially important at Glen Oaks Big Sur, where certain florals are not permitted. For example, pampas grass is not allowed, and bringing it could result in being asked to leave the property and possibly receiving a fine.

  • Share your budget, color palette, season, location, and overall vision so your florist can design something that fits your day

  • Let them know what your plans look like — if you’ll be hiking or moving around a lot, they can create something sturdy that will hold up

  • Send inspiration photos to show what you’re drawn to (whether that’s more organic and “wild” or classic and structured)

  • Think about any additional floral pieces you may want, like hair florals, boutonnieres, corsages, or extra stems for detail photos

  • Trust your florist’s expertise and stay open to their ideas — collaboration usually leads to the most beautiful results

HAIR & MAKEUP

One thing I hear all the time is that people love their photos most when they feel like themselves. So whatever you normally gravitate toward — wearing your hair down, keeping your makeup more natural — that’s usually the best place to start. You want to feel comfortable and like you, not overly done.

I also recommend skipping things like spray tans, self-tanner, or mineral sunscreen right before your day, since they can sometimes show up a little differently on camera.

And if you’re booking hair and makeup, just be sure your stylist is able to travel — most are based around Monterey, and Big Sur is about a 45-minute drive, so it’s something to plan for ahead of time

SWEET TREATS

One thing about the Monterey Peninsula is that we have great bakeries! A lot of couples love incorporating something sweet into their day — and it doesn’t have to be traditional. While cake is always a classic, you can absolutely go with whatever you love most, whether that’s cookies, pie, donuts, or even ice cream.

If you’re working with a baker, they can help with sizing and design, and it’s always fun to gather a little inspiration beforehand. But if you’d rather keep things simple, you can easily pick up a dessert from a local bakery or market, dress it up with a nice plate and a few florals, and still have something that feels special and intentional

OFFICIANTS

Marriage laws can look very different depending on where you’re getting married. In some states, you’re able to self-solemnize and marry yourselves, while others require an officiant and sometimes witnesses as well. There are also options where a friend or family member can become ordained (often quickly and at no cost) through organizations like the Universal Life Church, which is accepted in many U.S. states.

If you do decide to have an officiant, they’ll play a meaningful role in your ceremony, so it’s worth taking the time to find someone you genuinely connect with and feel comfortable around
